Pollença - CAP Formentor - port pollença

The Pollença to Cap de Formentor ride is 50 kilometres of everything that makes Mallorca the best cycling island in the world. Starting in the ancient walled town of Pollença in the north of the island, the route heads east through Port de Pollença and onto the Formentor peninsula, where the road begins to climb into one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Mediterranean.

The Cap de Formentor road is 20 kilometres of tight switchbacks, limestone cliff faces, and views over an impossibly blue sea that make most cyclists stop mid-road just to take it in. The road passes through tunnels bored straight into the rock, past the Mirador des Colomer at 330 metres above the sea, and all the way to the lighthouse at the very tip of the island. It is the kind of road that makes you ride slower not because you have to, but because you do not want it to end.

At the end: the lighthouse. Built in 1863, perched above a drop of nothing but blue. A moment to take it in. Then the return along the same road, which looks completely different in the other direction.

The descent back from Cap de Formentor is where this route reveals its second act. Every corner you climbed is now a sweeping view you earn at speed, with the whole bay of Pollença opening up ahead of you as the peninsula falls away.

Back in Port de Pollença, a coffee stop at a carefully chosen local café before the final few kilometres back to Pollença through the northern coast. The best way to end the best road on the island.

The Cap formentor Experience

The climb itself.

Cap de Formentor rises approximately 350 metres over the first 10 kilometres from Port de Pollença to the high point of the peninsula. The gradient is never brutal. It does not need to be. The road earns its reputation through what it shows you, not what it demands of your legs. The climb is steady and sustained, winding up through pine forests with the bay of Pollença falling away below you on the left and the open Mediterranean appearing on the right. Past the Mirador des Colomer at 330 metres above the sea, the full scale of the peninsula reveals itself. Most cyclists stop here. It would be strange not to.

The tunnels.

Further along, the road passes through a series of tunnels bored directly into the limestone cliff. Cut by hand in the 1920s, they are narrow, dramatic, and completely unexpected. Coming out of the second tunnel into open air above a sheer drop is one of those moments that reminds you why you came to Mallorca specifically to ride.

The descent to the lighthouse.

From the high point of the road, the descent twists down to the Far de Formentor, the lighthouse built in 1863 at the very tip of the island. The road is technical in places, with switchbacks that drop toward the sea on both sides. Your guide rides it with you, reads the road, and sets a pace that matches your confidence. At the bottom: the lighthouse, the end of the island, and nothing but open sea in every direction.

Before and after.

Getting to the start of the peninsula is a ride in itself. Depending on your starting point and fitness level, we build the approach through Pollença and Port de Pollença around you, with time to settle into the ride before the main event. The return leg gives you time to feel what you just did and enjoy the coast road back, with a coffee stop in Port de Pollença before the final roll into Pollença
